PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES

SmartChoices
SmartChoices provides a range of services for youth and adults. The program assists youth to stay in school, prepare for important educational and career choices, and become self-sufficient adults. For adults, SmartChoices provides skill assessment, connections to education and training, and career and job development.

RISE & STARS PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH

The RISE & STARS Community Center is a hub for exciting activities. Each day our staff provides a range of fun and educational programs. Stop by for a snack, play pool, get assistance with your homework or just visit with one of our caring staff members. The Community Center programs focus on both education and recreation. The Computer Lab is open for homework and educational programs.

The Community Center provides safe, constructive, fun activities for kids like:

STARS Mentoring Program matches students from nearby McLoughlin Middle School with caring adult volunteers. STARS Mentors are positive role models for low-income youth, helping young people explore their interests and build self-esteem.

Homework Help is available every day after school and two evenings per week. Students can do their homework in a supportive setting with access to the RISE & STARS computer lab and help from caring adult staff. During this time, educational games and activities help make learning fun.

Sports and recreation includes activities like swimming, basketball, open gym, game room, kickball, tennis, and more. We offer a variety of sports camps.

Arts and crafts are often available. A variety of different types of art are featured. Children's artwork is displayed around the center.

Special events and parties are the specialty at the Community Center. Parent volunteers help to make these events a success. There are also many family events; we do several community service events each year. To find out about these and more read the Neighbor to Neighbor newsletter.

Field Trips are announced on the activity board and in the monthly calendar. Recently the kids have gone to college and pro sporting events, children's theater, hikes, and the Oregon Zoo.

RISE & STARS PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS

The RISE & STARS Community Center offers opportunities for adult residents of VHA public housing to learn new skills, connect with resources, and meet new friends. There are also many opportunities for residents to get involved as volunteers.

Childcare is provided on-site to 22 infants and toddlers enrolled at McCoy center. This is a joint partnership through Learning Avenues Child Care, Early Head Start, and Vancouver Housing Authority. To enroll a child please call East Vancouver Child Care at 694-4411. Childcare is sometimes provided for families attending classes or workshops when arranged in advance.

Moving to Work Support includes information and referrals to assist residents with achieving their Moving to Work goals.

The Computer Lab is available to residents. This service includes Internet access. Classes are available for adults during the day. The lab is also available for students to do homework and research.

Recreation is also important. Game nights and Bingo are scheduled in response to the interest of the residents. Craft classes taught by residents are offered several times a week. Field trips and tickets to plays, lectures and concerts are often available.

RISE & STARS PROGRAMS FOR FAMILIES

Play & Learn. Parents and their 0-5 year-olds are invited to play together and learn about developmentally appropriate play, early brain development, and early literacy.

Family Events in the form of family nights and other activities that bring families together in positive ways and provide resources for safe, fun, and inexpensive ways to spend time together.
